What You Need to Know about the Peloton Treadmill Recall
In May 2021, Peloton and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Peloton treadmills after reports of at least 70 injuries and the death of one child.
Why are the treadmills being recalled?
A 6-year-old child died after being pulled under a Tread+, and there have been over 70 reports of other injuries, including kids who suffered broken bones, serious cuts and a brain injury.
The Tread+ is being recalled because children, pets and objects can be pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill. The CPSC reported there were multiple incidents of small children and pets getting injured, releasing a graphic home security video showing a child getting trapped.
The Tread, a different Peloton treadmill model, is being recalled because the touchscreen can detach and fall, causing injury.
Which Peloton products are being recalled?
Two Peloton treadmills are being recalled – the Tread+ and Tread.
Peloton first launched a treadmill as the Peloton Tread in 2018 and renamed it Tread+ in September 2020. The model number for the Tread+ is TR01, which is printed on a black sticker on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck. This is the product that’s being recalled because of serious injuries, including the death of a child.
The model number for the Tread is TR02. The Tread was sold as a limited edition, invitation-only release between about November 2020 and March 2021, according to the company.
What should I do if I have a Peloton treadmill?
If you have young children or pets, you should stop using your treadmill and unplug it. If you decide to keep using it, the CPSC urges you to keep it in a separate room from kids and pets and keep all equipment away from it. The company is also updating its software with a passcode that users will need to unlock it.
You can contact the company for a return and refund until Nov. 6, 2022, or if you want to keep it, the company is offering to move it to a safer place for free.
