If you’ve been injured and you’re searching for the right personal injury attorney to represent you, you may feel overwhelmed. Many personal injury lawyers have flashy commercials and prominent billboards boasting about their success. They tout their reputation with the insurance companies—but do they have the right experience and skills to help you?
As you evaluate your options, consider the following three factors.
- Does the lawyer have the experience you need?
Your attorney should have experience not just with personal injury cases but with the type of injury you’ve suffered. An attorney who only handles minor traffic accident settlements isn’t the best choice if you suffered childhood sexual abuse. An attorney who’s never handled a big case shouldn’t be the one to hold a hospital accountable in your medical malpractice lawsuit.
You want an attorney with the experience to understand what facts are truly important. You also want an attorney who can confidently take your case to trial. If your attorney has never set foot in a courtroom, you’re not going to get the best results.
- Can you talk with the lawyer?
This is actually a two-part question! First, be sure that you meet with the lawyer who would represent you—not an assistant or a paralegal—at your first meeting. You want someone you can reach when you have questions, not someone too busy to answer your calls.
Second, does the lawyer listen to you? Can you ask questions? Do you understand the lawyer’s answers? An attorney who listens carefully and fully explains your rights, options, and responsibilities—without condescension and in a way that you understand—is a lawyer you’ll be able to work with and trust.
- Does the lawyer have the resources you’ll need for your case?
Is the firm able to do an accident reconstruction? Can your lawyer investigate events that occurred long ago? Will you have access to medical experts who understand your injuries? Make sure that your case will receive all the attention and the investment needed to optimize your results.
