About the case
Attorney Michael Pfau represented the parents of a schizophrenic man who was killed during a police arrest. Plaintiff alleged that the decedent and the parents’ civil rights were violated when an arresting officer used excessive force in making the arrest. The federal district judge bifurcated the case between liability and damages. After two weeks of trial, the jury returned a liability verdict in favor of the plaintiff, and the defendant settled for $1,000,000 the following day.
